How to Cook Brown Rice and Wild Rice

There are many varieties of brown rice, but they all have one thing in common, the grains are not hulled and polished so the nutritious outer bran layer remains intact, hence the tan color of this rice. The higher fiber content of brown rice also gives it a distinctive nutty flavor and chewy texture. Your Zojirushi rice cooker will cook brown rice so easily and perfectly that you’ll want to serve it everyday.

Note: Brown rice requires a little more water than white rice. To cook brown rice it is recommended to use 1-1/2 to 2 times the amount of water to rice, unless your rice cooker includes a brown rice function. (NOTE: You must use the plastic measuring cup that comes with your rice cooker to measure both the raw rice and the water.) Please refer to your operating instruction to see if your rice cooker has a brown rice function. For those models without a brown rice function, if you use 2 cups (using the rice cooker’s measuring cup) of raw brown rice, fill the pan with 3-4 cups (use the rice cooker’s measuring cup) of water (make adjustments to your preference). We also recommend soaking brown rice for 30 minutes before cooking. Note: For a softer textured brown rice, use the larger quantity of water.

1. Measure the rice accurately using the plastic measuring cup that comes with every Zojirushi rice cooker and add to the inner cooking pan. If desired, wash the rice right in the inner cooking pan with plenty of cold water. Rub the grains of rice gently between the palms of your hands. Tip the pan to drain as much water as possible without spilling the rice. No need to use a colander. Repeat 3 or 4 times. Washing off the excess starch, the result will be a lighter, fluffier rice.

2.Using the embossed markings in the inside of the inner pan as a guide, add cold water to the rice. Fill up to the level marking that corresponds to the number of cups of brown rice used under “Brown Rice”, or if your rice cooker does not have a brown rice function, fill water using the same plastic measuring cup used to measure the rice and use 1-1/2 to 2 times the amount of water to rice. Be sure that all the grains of rice are completely submerged and the surface of the rice is flat and level to ensure even cooking.

3. Wipe off any excess water from the outside of the inner cooking pan and place in the Main Body of the rice cooker. Close the lid securely, plug in the rice cooker and press the cooking switch to start.

When the rice is ready, most models of rice cookers will turn off and switch to a “Keep Warm” cycle automatically. Before opening the lid, allow the cooked rice to “rest” for about 15 minutes to completely absorb any excess moisture. On some advanced models this is done automatically.

After the “rest” period, open the cooker and use the special nonstick rice spatula that comes with every Zojirushi rice cooker to fluff and serve your delicious, moist brown rice.
